College students can encounter a number of difficult situations while at Illinois State: the break up of an important relationship, confusion about career choices, difficulty managing stress, and conflict with family. For these and many other reasons, each year many Illinois State students turn to the staff at SCS to help them talk through their feelings and thoughts about difficult situations, learn new coping strategies, and/or make decisions about what to do.
The staff at SCS is well trained to help students with a variety of issues: from dealing with homesickness to managing complex mental health issues. To find out more about our services, click on the links below.
Counseling can be intimidating if you have never tried it before. Many students find it a little nerve wracking to share their private struggles with a stranger. However, most students find that their comfort level increases quickly – usually after just one or two session. Remember that the counselors are not trying to judge you. Most counselors are very compassionate, caring people who genuinely want to help people feel better. A good counselor will allow you to open up at your own pace and will make every effort to help you feel comfortable. If your feelings of discomfort remain, tell your counselor. He/she will want to know how you are feeling, and will work with you to find ways to help you be more comfortable.
Many students worry about the stigma or believe that only “crazy” people need counseling. Rest assured that most of our clients have very “normal” concerns – they are dealing with issues that many people deal with and are, in no way, “crazy.” Asking for help with a problem is not a sign that you are weak or defective. Seeking another’s perspective can be a very mature way of dealing with stress.
If you want to talk to someone about counseling services, call 438-3655 or come directly to Room 320 of the Student Services Building to make an initial appointment. During this first appointment, a professional counselor will work to help you clarify your concerns and develop solutions. If ongoing counseling, or other service are needed, it may be arranged at that time. All personal counseling here is provided without charge.
Psychiatric consultations are also available to discuss issues related to medication.
